The Neuro-oncology program at the University of Florida are leaders in applying modern microsurgical and image guided techniques to the removal of complex and deep seated tumors involving the brain. The full gamut of tumors are seen. Malignant lesions include glioblastoma, anaplastic astrocytoma, germinoma, metastases, and CNS lymphoma. Many benign tumors are also seen at UF, including acoustic schwannomas, meningiomas, pituitary adenomas, craniopharyngiomas, ependymomas, colloid cysts, and choroid plexus papillomas. These lesions are treated with the latest microsurgical, computer assisted, and radiosurgical techniques. When surgery is not curative or appropriate, radiosurgery or conformal fractionated radiation therapy is often recommended. Multiple chemotherapy protocols are also offered.
The Brain Tumor Board, comprised of neurosurgeons, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, and other specialists, meets weekly to review all tumor cases and create a comprehensive treatment plan for all patients. Last year over 350 brain tumor procedures were performed at UF.
