The Surgical Research and Training Laboratory was established to teach advanced operative techniques to surgeons and other technical personnel. Originally offered for Neurosurgical training, use of the Surgical Research and Training Laboratory (SRTL) has been expanded to encompass other surgical specialties including Orthopedics, Anesthesia Pain Management, General and Vascular Surgery and Interventional Radiology. Surgeons training in these programs, come from institutions and hospitals all over the United States and abroad. Currently, we have several programs using the SRTL. We also have future plans to offer training for physician assistants, nurses, radiology technicians and surgical technicians, and research investigators whose work requires general surgical and microsurgical procedures.
Courses in the SRTL are offered at predetermined times throughout the year, but individual study is available on a more flexible schedule. The topic matter and length of time provided through the individual study programs can be tailored to the interests of the participant. Participants perform procedures on human cadavers under the supervision of MBI-UF faculty. Each participant has access to microsurgical instrumentation as well as general and spine surgery instrument.
