  INTRODUCTION

The University of Florida Department of Neurological Surgery offers a comprehensive training program in a 7 year format. The PGY-1 year is a neurosurgery internship, including 3 months of neurosurgery, 3 months of neurology and 6 months of surgical subspecialty rotations. The PGY-II and PGY-III years are junior resident years, both at Shands Hospital and the VA hospital. The PGY-IV year is spent doing neurosurgical research. The PGY-V year is the senior resident year at Shands Hospital. The PGY-VI year is spent as Chief Resident, 6 months at each hospital. The PGY-VII year is a "Transition to Practice" year as junior faculty.

The program adheres to an 80 hour work week, with in house call approximately 4-5 calls per month. Link to AAMC article

PROSPECTIVE RESIDENTS AND MEDICAL STUDENTS

The Department offers a one month externship for fourth year medical students. The externship includes paid housing near the hospital. Please contact fjohnson@neurosurgery.ufl.edu for more information.

Prospective Resident Presentation

UF Medical Students are able to participate in the Neurosurgery Clerkship during their 3rd and 4th year rotations. The rotation includes extensive operating room experience, as well as clinic exposure. After completing the rotation the student should be familiar with the neurological exam, basics of neuro-imaging, and be able recognize basic cranial and spinal disease. The rotation is supervised by Stephen Lewis, MD.
