Gregory J. Velat, M.D. earned his medical degree in May 2003 from UF, ranked 5th of 110 students, and began his residency in neurosurgery at UF the same year. Dr. Velat obtained his BS in biomedical science from UF Junior Honors Program in May 2000.

Dr. Velat is principally interested in the pathophysiology of aneurysm formation and the innovation of brain aneurysm treatments. During his research year in 2006-07, he studied basic vascular biology and potential stem cell incorporation into animal models of aneurysm formation under the direction of Dr. Brian Hoh.

Dr. Velat plans to continue his research in neurovascular surgery. Upon completion of residency in 2010, he will be completing a one year open cerebovascular fellowship with Dr. Robert Spetzler at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, AZ. In July of 2011, he will return to the University of Florida to complete his endovascular fellowship under the mentorship of Drs. Hoh, Mocco, and Firment.

Dr. Velat was awarded the 2008 Charles "Chuck" Shank Award, a departmental honor awarded annually to a resident who exhibits Dr. Shank's perseverance in patient care. Dr. Velat was also presented with the 2003 Neurosurgery Student award at UF. Dr. Velat received the UF Neurosurgery High Score Award for the ABNS primary exam in 2007. He is a member of the CNS, the AANS, the FNS, the FMA, and the AMA.

Dr. Velat plays the guitar and enjoys running, weight lifting, baseball, basketball, and attending UF sporting events.
