Residency: Rotation Objectives - Competencies

The ACGME has determined that all physicians graduating from an accredited program should be proficient in six areas of specialized skills. The neurosurgery program at the University of Florida provides the needed educational experiences through various rotations, conferences and lectures. The evaluation system is designed to determine the resident's progress in attaining proficiency in these areas.
The specific language from the program requirements is included below:
Residents must become competent in the following six areas at the level expected of a neurosurgical practitioner.
1. Patient Care - residents must be able to provide patient care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the treatment of health problems and the promotion of health.
Neurosurgery residents must:
a. Assess and manage patients with neurosurgical problems.
b. Develop the technical skills required to perform neurosurgical procedures.
2. Medical Knowledge - residents must demonstrate knowledge about established and evolving biomedical, clinical, and cognate (e.g. epidemiological and social-behavioral) sciences and the application of this knowledge to patient care.
Neurosurgery residents are expected to:
a. Demonstrate knowledge of pertinent basic and clinical science information and the ability to apply it to clinical practice.
3. Practice-Based Learning and Improvement - residents must be able to investigate and evaluate their patient care practices, appraise and assimilate scientific evidence, and improve their patient care practices.
Neurosurgery residents are expected to:
a. Critique personal practice outcomes.
b. Locate, analyze and apply scientific knowledge to his/her own practice.
c. Facilitate the learning of students and other health care professionals.
4. Interpersonal and Communication Skills - residents must be able to demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that result in effective information exchange and teaming with patients, their patients families, and professional associates.
Neurosurgical residents are expected to:
a. Work effectively with other health care professionals.
b. Create and sustain a therapeutic and ethically sound relationship with
patients.
5. Professionalism - residents must demonstrate a commitment to carrying out professional responsibilities, adherence to ethical principles, and sensitivity to a diverse patient population.
Neurosurgical residents are expected to:
a. Maintain high standards of ethical behavior.
b. Demonstrate respect, compassion, and integrity.
c. Demonstrate sensitivity to age, gender and culture of patients and other health care professionals.
6. Systems-Based Practice - residents must demonstrate an awareness of and response to the larger context and system of health care and effectively call on system resources to provide optimal care.
Neurosurgical residents are expected to:
a. Practice high quality, cost effective patient care.
b. Understand different types of medical practice and health care delivery systems.
c. Demonstrate an understanding of the role of different specialists and other health care professionals in overall patient management.
