Matthew F. Lawson, MD
MATTHEW F. LAWSON, MD, attended Harvard University and graduated magna cum laude with a degree in biochemical sciences in 2000. He then attended the University of Florida and received his medical degree cum laude in 2004. Currently, Dr. Lawson is the Chief Resident in neurosurgery at the University of Florida, and he is scheduled to complete his training in June, 2012.
In July 2006, Dr. Lawson became a resident in neurosurgery following several years of training in a combined general surgery/plastic and reconstructive surgery program. During his research year he completed an enfolded fellowship in endovascular neurosurgery with Drs. Hoh, Mocco, and Firment. Dr. Lawson was selected as a Council of State Neurological Societies (CSNS) Socioeconomic Fellow for 2009-2010, and following the completion of this fellowship he was appointed a CNS Representative to the CSNS.
He is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the Gold Humanism Honor Society, CNS, and AANS. In 2010, Dr. Lawson received the Chuck Shank Award for professionalism in neurosurgery as well as the U.F. Resident Research Award for his research presentation entitled “Stent Flow Remodeling Causes Spontaneous Complete Occlusion of Incompletely Coiled Aneurysms.” In 2011, Dr. Lawson received the Outstanding Resident Educator Award from the U.F. Society of Teaching Scholars for excellence in teaching fellow residents and medical students.
Dr. Lawson’s clinical interests are in cerebrovascular disease, endovascular neurosurgery, skull base surgery, and general neurosurgery. He serves on the departmental research and QA committees and has an interest in socioeconomic issues within the field of neurosurgery.
Additionally, Dr. Lawson enjoys teaching personal financial planning and investing to graduating fourth year medical students in a medical school course called "Internship 101." In his spare time he enjoys spending time with his wife, Janice, a hematology/oncology fellow at U.F., and their son, Benjamin.
