Neurosurgery M-4 Externship Program
The University of Florida, Department of Neurosurgery invites qualified fourth year medical students to participate in the Neurosurgery Externship Program. During the four week rotation, students will function as an integral part of a faculty led team caring for patients on the neurosurgery service at Shands Hospital at UF.
Rotating students are expected to demonstrate an enthusiasm for their work and an active interest in learning the nuances of advanced neurosurgical care. Students will round each morning with the resident and attending teams, and will then be encouraged to spend time in the operating room. Students will have the opportunity to observe a variety of neurosurgical procedures such as: stereotactic radiosurgery, endovascular surgery, complex spine surgery, brain tumor surgery, epilepsy surgery, functional neurosurgery, skull base surgery and more, as well as observing the more critical aspects of neurosurgical procedures. When not in the operating room, students will assist the junior and senior residents in direct patient care.
Students will attend the department's daily teaching conference and will be given the opportunity to give a lecture on a topic of their choice during their rotation. Weekly lunches will be scheduled with the rotating student and selected faculty. During these lunches didactic topics will be covered, as well as general mentoring regarding career development in Neurosurgery. Students will also be encouraged to participate in departmental functions and social activities.
Applications should be made simultaneously via UF's Neurological Surgery Residency Coordinator, Jamie Dow and the UF College of Medicine.
